Storage Unit Prices vs. Value: What Are You Really Paying For?

Storage prices in Auckland are all over the place. Some places charge $100 a week. Others are closer to $250. But what are you actually getting for that money?

At Safestore Containers, we’ve seen heaps of people jump on the cheapest option, only to realise later that it wasn’t such a great deal. Damaged furniture. Extra fees. Sites that are nearly impossible to access. It adds up. Fast.

So, we put together this guide to help you look beyond the sticker price. Because storage isn’t just about the number on the quote. It’s about what that number actually gets you.

In this article, we break down what storage units really cost and how to spot when a ‘deal’ might not be such a deal after all.

What’s Actually Included in the Price?

Let’s say you find a unit advertised at $130 a week. That sounds decent until you realise it doesn’t include GST. Now it’s $149.50. Still okay? Maybe. But now you’re told there’s a one-off $50 setup fee. And you have to buy their padlock for another $25. Suddenly you’re paying way more than expected just to get started.

Some companies also charge bond or admin fees on top. Others make you commit to a monthly contract, which might look cheaper on paper, but costs more if you only need a few weeks.

Weekly rates are easier to budget for and more flexible, but only if they’re actually all-inclusive. Always ask what’s included before you sign anything.

Ground-Level Vs Upper-Level Pricing

You’ll usually pay more for a ground-level container. And for good reason.

Say you’re comparing two 20ft containers. One is $160 a week, but it’s on the upper level. The other is $200, and it’s on the ground. That extra $40 gets you drive up access. No stairs. No lifting. No messing around with trolleys or tight corners.

If you’re storing a full house lot, or plan to come and go a few times, it’s 100% worth it. If you’re just storing a few boxes you won’t need for six months? Go for the upper level and save your cash. The trick is knowing the trade-off and choosing what works for you.

Time and Convenience Matter Too

Let’s say you save $20 a week going with a cheaper yard that’s a 30-minute drive away. Sounds fine, until you have to go back three times in one week because you forgot something.

That’s a couple of hours of your time gone. Plus petrol. Plus frustration. Multiply that over a few weeks and you’ve wiped out your savings completely.

Also, think about the access setup. Can you drive right in? Are the roads decent? Are there big signs and clear instructions, or is it the kind of place where you’re guessing which gate’s the right one? All those little things add up.

If you’re accessing the unit more than once, convenience isn’t just a ‘nice to have.’ It’s part of what you’re paying for.

Unit Condition: What’s the Risk?

A cheap unit isn’t cheap if your stuff gets wrecked.

We’ve seen containers that look fine from the outside but leak like a sieve when it rains. Or doors that jam. Or dodgy locks that anyone with a bolt cutter could open in ten seconds. That’s the stuff you don’t see in the quote. But you definitely feel it later.

You want containers that are fully sealed, not just patched up. Ones that can handle Auckland’s weather, from hot to cold, dry, damp, and everything in between. You also want a secure site: proper fencing, CCTV, and controlled access.

If your stuff matters to you, don’t skimp on this part.

Flexibility and Exit Terms

This is where people often get caught out. They find a cheap deal, take it, then realise they’re stuck.

Some companies need two weeks’ notice before you move out. Some don’t refund you if you leave early. Others lock you into a minimum term even if you’re only using half of it. It’s not always about the cheapest weekly rate. If a unit costs a bit more but lets you move in and out on your own terms, you’re in a much better position.

Read the fine print. Or better yet, just ask them directly. If they can’t explain it clearly, that’s your sign to back out.
